Japanese riders take top two places in World Jockey Series

Japanese jockey Yasunari Iwata picked up 41 points to win the 19th World
Super Jockey Series held Saturday at Hanshin Racecourse in Japan. Iwata won the finale
in
the four-race series, the Golden Boots Trophy, aboard 9-5 favorite Osumi Grass One (Grass
Wonder)
to beat out Norihiro Yokoyama by a single point. Iwata was also second in the
Golden Whip Trophy but finished off the board in the other two events.

Yokoyama
captured the Golden Saddle Trophy with 7-2 shot Nishino Due (Brian’s Time) and was third in
the
Golden Spur Trophy. Irishman Michael Kinane finished third with 39 points after
winning the Golden Spur with 9-5 favorite Super Chance (Sunday Silence), while U.S. representative
Rafael Bejarano was fourth with 36 points.

Australia’s Darren Beadman posted the
upset with 14-1 outsider Lord Majesty (Brian’s Time) and ended up fifth with 33 points. Ireland’s
Kieren Fallon and France’s Stephane Pasquier tied for ninth. Also carrying the flag
for the United States, Edgar Prado accumulated 20 points to finish 12th in the 14-rider
field.
