Hanson’s WinStar Fantasy Derby Dozen

Like Ed DeRosa and my other Brisnet/TwinSpires colleagues, I’ll be participating in the 2017 WinStar Fantasy Derby contest.

In forming my stable I’ve attempted to achieve a semblance of balance, both geographic and in experience shown so far among my group of 12. In other words, these wouldn’t necessarily be my top 12 Kentucky Derby (G1) candidates jumbled up, but they are a group I hope will consistently pick up checks between now and mid-April in all areas of the country.

No-brainers like Classic Empire, McCraken, Mastery, and Gormley top my list, but I took a stand against some of the other logical candidates of the present like Practical Joke and Mo Town.

I’m hoping El Areeb can continue to rack up earnings in New York, while Guest Suite and Uncontested are my primary Fair Grounds and Oaklawn hopes, respectively. Saint’s Fan, who was scratched from last month’s Lecomte (G3) due to a wide draw, is another I believe has potential to improve in the Louisiana series for Dallas Stewart.

American Anthem and No Dozing are both graded-placed thus far, while stakes winner Irish War Cry is set to contest Saturday’s Holy Bull (G2). My one “flyer” is Always Dreaming, who ran well in two starts at Saratoga last summer and comes off a blowout maiden win at Tampa for Todd Pletcher.

Good luck to all my competitors, may the best stable win, and if you want to research your options before choosing yours, check out the FREE Brisnet Ultimate PPs for all Triple Crown nominees.
