The $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (G3), a 1 1/16-mile race for juveniles won in recent years by such luminaries as Exaggerator, Gunnevera, Goldencents, and Big Drama, is one of eight open stakes races that have been canceled during the first half of the upcoming 2017-18 meeting at Delta Downs.

The cancellations have come at the recommendation of the HBPA Board of Directors. Business at Delta Downs’ casino has reportedly taken a significant drop since Hurricane Harvey hit the region last month, thus negatively effecting the purse account for the meet.

“While we are disappointed to scale back our first-half calendar, we believe this decision is appropriate, given the tremendous amount of damage throughout the region and the current focus on recovery efforts,” said Steve Kuypers, Vice President and General Manager of Delta Downs. “By continuing our support of the stakes races for Louisiana owners and trainers, we will help ensure the well-being and livelihood of our state’s hardworking horsemen during this difficult time.”

Also canceled was the $500,000 Delta Downs Princess (G3) for two-year-old fillies, which was scheduled to be run on the same November 18 program as the Jackpot.

The Jackpot and the Princess were point-scoring opportunities in the Road to the Kentucky Derby Series and Road to the Kentucky Oaks Series, respectively, offering qualifying points of 10-4-2-1 to the top four finishers of each race.
