Mutuel field, Game Winner close as favorites in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager

The mutuel field (#24) or “All Other 3-Year-Olds” wagering interest in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) closed as the 5-2 favorite when betting concluded on Sunday at 6 p.m. (ET). While the mutuel field’s odds didn’t change from the 5-2 morning line, undefeated Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) champion and Eclipse Award winner Game Winner (#3) was bet down to 5-1 after opening at 6-1 to become favored amongst the individual betting interests.

Only two other individual interests closed at single-digit odds during Pool 2 of the KDFW: Hidden Scroll (#8) and Improbable (#9). Hidden Scroll saw his 12-1 morning line fall to 7-1 while Improbable’s 8-1 opening price also closed at 7-1. Both colts are unbeaten to date, with Hidden Scroll romping by 14 lengths in his January 26 debut at Gulfstream Park and Improbable last seen concluding his juvenile campaign with a five-length victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) on December 8.

Undefeated Instagrand (#10) came next, closing at his 10-1 opening odds. The Jerry Hollendorfer pupil broke his maiden and captured the Best Pal Stakes (G2) by a combined 20 1/4 lengths last year. War of Will (#22) dropped from 30-1 to 17-1 by pool close on Sunday. The War Front colt went 0-1-1 from four starts on turf to open his career before trainer Mark Casse switched him to dirt for his juvenile finale at Churchill Downs on November 24. War of Will romped by five lengths and returned January 19 to take the Lecomte Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds by four lengths.

Others of interest in Pool 2 of the KDFW include Harvey Wallbanger (#7) (28-1 final odds), who upset the Holy Bull Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on February 2 at 29-1; Grade 1 winner Knicks Go (#11) (78-1), who has been unplaced in two starts since finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile; Grade 2 scorer Maximus Mischief (#13) (38-1), most recently third in the Holy Bull as the 4-5 favorite; once-beaten Mucho Gusto (#14) (23-1), victor of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) in his sophomore bow for trainer Bob Baffert; and recent Withers Stakes (G3) hero Tax (#19) (63-1).

Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opened February 8, saw handle total $533,977 ($398,997 in the Win pool and $134,980 in Exactas). That represents a 2.4 percent increase over last year’s corresponding pool, which closed with $521,650 total handle ($363,389 in the Win pool and a record $158,262 in Exactas).

There are two remaining KDFW pools for the 2019 Kentucky Derby, which will take place at Churchill Downs on May 4. Pool 3 is scheduled for March 8-10 while Pool 4 will take place April 5-7. The only Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (KOFW) will be held during the same March 8-10 period as Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.
