Epitome dies at 19

Champion EPITOME (Summing) died Friday after suffering a
ruptured artery. The 19-year-old mare was boarded at John and
Benny Williams’ Elmwood Farm near Versailles, Kentucky.

Conditioned by Phil Hauswald, Epitome broke her maiden at
Keeneland before running second in the Alcibiades S. (G2) over
that same track just 11 days later. Two weeks after that, she
captured the Pocahontas S. at Churchill Downs, then shipped
cross-country to Hollywood Park and scored a nose victory in the
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Epitome completed her racing career with a second-place finish
in the Falls City H. (G3) in the fall of her sophomore campaign,
but continued her winning ways in the breeding shed. Her first
foal, Faltaat (Mr. Prospector), was named highweight in the
United Arab Emirates and was followed by stakes winner Danjur
(Dayjur) and multiple Grade/Group 2 hero Essence of Dubai
(Pulpit).

Epitome’s last foal is a yearling filly by Old Trieste. She
was in foal to Pulpit at the time of her death and will be buried
at Elmwood Farm next to Hall of Famer and champion mare
Flawlessly.
