WINNING WITH WORKOUTS

DECEMBER 23

In this regular weekly feature, Handicapper’s Report will present examples of
how to use workouts in your handicapping using actual results with horses
featured in our reports. To access the HR reports and to see the highlights of

Today’s Topic: A disappointing race following good morning workouts can
lead to nice mutuels next time out

Trouble lines or improper placement of horses that have been working well in
the morning can lead to a sub par performance that inflate their odds next time
they run. It is important to remember that a horse was working well prior to its
last race and look for reasons that led to the poor performance. We include the
workouts prior to each horse’s last race for that purpose in our Daily Clocker’s
Report.

Two examples of this topic presented themselves on November 16 at Hollywood
Park. In the 2ND race, ASONG FOR BILLY (Unbridled’s Song) had been working very well prior to his
return to racing from an eight-month layoff and according to the HR Trip Notes
for that race he “bobbled sharply a stride out of the gate, dropped back…”

In addition, the race was one of the toughest non-winners of two other than
maiden or claiming ever run at Hollywood. The winner, Truly a Judge (Judge T C), got an HR
performance rating two points higher than par for a stakes race, and indeed
Truly a Judge came back to win the Native Diver H. (G3). ASONG FOR BILLY won
going away at $13.80, bet down from a 10-1 morning line.

Prior to Last Race
ASONG FOR BILLY   HOL 11/12/04 B+ FT 113.3H

Continues to train
strongly. Came the final ¼ in 24.2 to a hand ride. Had a final time of
113.1. He is getting close to a return, and should be sharp when he
does.

In the 6TH race, AMMANN had worked well and was tabbed by our clocker before
being entered over his head in a $50K claimer on the turf. Our Trip Notes for
that race on AMMANN said “still think he’s…better on dirt.” He got the needed
drop in class (as called for by our clocker) to $25K in a route on the dirt and
paid $9.80 to win.

Prior to Last Race
AMMANN   HOL 11/10/04 B FT 49.0H

Came the last ¼ in 24.2
without being urged. Final time was 49.1. If kept at right level, he
should be sharp again.
