Mullins, Cerin horses to be quarantined

Last updated: 2/15/05 2:25 PM

Southern California trainers Jeff Mullins and Vladimir Cerin will have all of
their entrants confined to a quarantine barn 24 hours before their respective
races for the next 30 days at Santa Anita. The sanctions were announced last
Thursday and Saturday, respectively, by a consortium of Santa Anita, the
Thoroughbred Owners of California and the California Thoroughbred Trainers.

The Southern California track is conducting and paying for testing that is
designed to detect “milkshakes,” usually defined as the illegal
administration of alkalizing agents that are believed to
help reduce fatigue.

Both trainers have had horses test positive for high total carbon dioxide
levels at the current Santa Anita meet.
