Nelson injures shoulder

Last updated: 2/17/05 3:55 PM

Jockey Leroy Nelson, who fell from his mount right before the finish of
Wednesday’s 2ND race at Gulfstream Park, suffered a separated shoulder and will
be sidelined for an indefinite period, according to Jockey Guild representative
Roger Velez.

Velez said Nelson had an operation on the same shoulder last year after a
spill.

Nelson was aboard HAIL TO THE WORLD (Worldly Manner) in the one-mile maiden
claiming event when the three-year-old took a bad step and bobbled
around the quarter-pole. His left foot slipped out of the iron and the
25-year-old rider was unseated in the final yards prior to the finish line.
Nelson held on to the reins as the horse crossed the wire, but the
stewards ruled that Hail to the World did not carry the assigned weight, and, as a
result, was placed last.
