Fair Grounds Oaks

Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC’s SUMMERLY (Summer Squall) went right to the lead
in Saturday’s $300,000
Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) and was never headed at any call,
defeating five other sophomore fillies in the 1 1/16-mile fast track event.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Summerly and jockey Jerry Bailey set modest early fractions
of :24 2/5, :49, 1:13 1/5 and 1:37 2/5 before stopping the clock in 1:43 3/5, 4
3/4-lengths ahead of her nearest rival.

Entering the stretch, the chestnut accelerated away from the field, as second-choice Runway Model (Petionville) unleashed her run to no avail. Carlea (Carson City), who had tracked just behind the
pacesetter throughout, held on for second by a half-length over the
hard-charging Runway Model.

The 1-2 post time favorite returned $3, $2.20 and $2.10 on top of the $35.20 exacta and
$87.40 trifecta. Carlea, off at nearly 29-1, gave back $7.60 and $2.10. Runway Model,
who was off at 2-1, paid $2.10 for the show. Soul Search (A.P. Indy) was next and completed the
2-4-6-1 superfecta worth $384.40. She was followed under the line by Eyes on
Eddy (Touch Gold) and Enduring Will (Arch).

Bred in the Bluegrass State by Tom Van Meter and Michael Lowenbaum, Summerly
is the second foal out of the multiple Grade 3-placed Mr. Prospector mare Here I Go. She counts
herself as a half-sister to the stakes-placed Let ’em Go (Red Ransom) as well as
an unnamed two-year-old filly by Menifee and an unnamed yearling colt by Touch
Gold. Summerly improves her mark to 6-4-0-1 with earnings of $349,035. This is
her second graded stakes win after taking the Silverbulletday S. (G3) earlier
this year.
