Harry Aleo’s LOST IN THE FOG (Lost Soldier) proved true to form Sunday in the
$300,000 Carry Back S. (G2) at Calder Race Course, breaking to the early lead,
setting fractions of :22 2/5, :45 2/5 and :57 before turning in a commanding
defeat over his opponents. The dark bay colt opened up a 7 1/4-length lead
under jockey Russell Baze en route to setting a new stakes record, completing
six furlongs in 1:09 1/5 over a track listed as fast. This eclipses the previous
record held by Valid Video (Valid Wager) in 2003. The time was also three-fifths
faster than the times of Woke Up Dreamin (Holy Bull) in the Smile Sprint H. (G2)
and Madcap Escapade (Hennessy) in the Princess Rooney H. (G2) run earlier in the
day on the Summit of Speed card.

“We didn’t plan to go to the front, but there’s no sense taking back if
you’re there,” trainer Greg Gilchrist said. “He had to run to beat some nice horses
today, although the race at Belmont (Riva Ridge Breeders’ Cup S. [G2]) was
probably more demanding. We’ll stick with the plan and run him back in the
King’s Bishop (S. [G1] on August 27), which give him seven weeks, and then he’ll
only run once more this year. The Breeders’ Cup (Sprint [G1]) is a good
possibility. He’s not Breeders’ Cup eligible, but I don’t think that will be a
problem if that’s what we decide to do.”

The three-year-old Lost in the Fog left the gate at 1-9 and was the only horse of the six
entrants to be listed at single-digit odds. He returned $2.10, $2.10 and $2.10
for the victory, keying the $14.80 exacta. Qureall (Yes It’s True) came home
second at 25-1 to return $2.40 and $2.10 and Hot Space (Lord Carson), the 11-1
second-favorite, gave back $2.10 while ending the $66 trifecta. Cin Cin
(Precocity) rounded out the $195.40 superfecta (5-1-3-6) at 18-1 while Dazzling
Dr. Cevin (Cutlass Fax) and Crawfish King (Just a Cat) rounded out the order of
finish.

Lost in the Fog keeps his perfect record intact, winning his eighth
consecutive race and increasing his earnings to $684,075. Among his wins are
victories in the Swale S. (G2), Bay Shore S. (G3) and aforementioned Riva Ridge. The dark bay
was bred in Florida by Susan Seper and is out of the unraced mare Cloud Break
(Dr. Carter) and is a half-brother to My Little Devil, an unraced two-year-old
colt by Devil’s Bag. Lost in the Fog was purchase by his connections for $48,000 at
the 2003 OBS August yearling sale.
