proved much the best in taking the $147,000
Best Pal S. (G2) by 2 3/4 lengths at
Del Mar on Sunday. Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Victor Espinoza, the
dark bay broke alertly and stayed along the rail for the duration of the race,
stopping the teletimer in a snappy 1:15 3/5 for the 6 1/2-furlong fast track
feature. Going off as the 4-5 favorite, What A Song rewarded backers with mutuels of $3.60 and $2.40, while topping the $2.70 exacta ($1) in the
four-horse field. Show wagering was not offered.
Bashert (Tiger Ridge) made a mild move turning for home, but could do no
better than the place spot. The 8-5 second choice was worth $2.60 for second.
Plug Me In (Hold For Gold) earned a black-type placing while third at 20-1, 6
1/2 lengths farther back. Corazondelcampeon (Comic Strip) was next by another 10
lengths, while A. P. Warrior (A.P. Indy) was scratched during the post parade.
What A Song moves his mark to a perfect three-for-three, while boosting his
earnings to $179,700 in the process. The sharp juvenile annexed the Hollywood
Juvenile Championship (G3) most recently.
Bred in the Sunshine State by Susan Kahn, the winner was the sale topper at
$1.9 million at the 2005 Barretts March Two-Year-Olds-in-Training Sale. He was
produced from the stakes-winning What A Knight (Tough Night) and has a pair of
unnamed half-siblings, a yearling filly by Holy Bull as well as a 2005 colt by
Yes It’s True.
