The first foal by 2004 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness S.
(G1) winner SMARTY JONES (Elusive Quality) was born early
Tuesday morning at Arthur Hancock’s Stone Farm near Paris,
Kentucky.

The bay filly is the third foal out of the winning Danzig
mare Shoppingwithbetty, who is owned by Hancock and Tom
Tatham of Oak Cliff Stables. The nine-year-old mare is a
half-sister to Grade 3 winner Storm Broker (Storm Cat) and
French stakes winner Royal Arrow (Dayjur). She is out of
1991 Top Flight H. (G1) victress and $735,409 earner Buy the
Firm (Affirmed), who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner
Image of Greatness (Secretariat).

Shoppingwithbetty was due to foal on January 19.

“We’re very excited about the foal,” Hancock said. “A lot
of work goes into bringing a foal into the world and it’s
wonderful to have a good looking one like this. She has good
bone and a lot of substance, she’s balanced and she’s quite
a bright and intelligent-acting filly.”

Smarty Jones, who retired with earnings of $7,613,155,
stands at Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Kentucky, for a
fee of $100,000 guaranteed live foal.

“It’s great to have Smarty Jones’ first foal on the
ground,” said Robert Clay, owner of Three Chimneys Farm.
“We’ve been looking forward to this all year. As a
racehorse, Smarty was virtually everything you could ask for
and we’re hoping he will be just as great a stallion. This
is the first step.”

Smarty Jones was bred to 111 mares last year. A total of 91 other
mares are pregnant and expected to produce foals in 2006.
