Folklore returns in Santa Ynez

Last updated: 1/14/06 2:56 PM

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) princess and likely Eclipse Award winner FOLKLORE (Tiznow) will concede
seven to nine pounds to her rivals as the 123-pound highweight in her sophomore
bow, Monday’s $150,000
Santa
Ynez S. (G2)
at Santa Anita. The D. Wayne
Lukas trainee has yet to finish worse than second in seven career starts, with
her two latest wins coming in the Matron S. (G1) and Juvenile Fillies. The bay
miss took a slight break after the Breeders’ Cup, then returned to the worktab
in mid-December and has recorded three moves at Santa Anita to prepare for
Monday’s seven-furlong test. Edgar Prado will make the trip west for the ride.

Among those Folklore will face in her return is TRICK’S PIC (Favorite Trick),
who will be staying at the sprint distance for which she’s shown a preference.
Trained by Patrick Biancone, the dark bay miss broke her maiden in September at
Monmouth Park before stretching out to 8 1/2 furlongs in the Alcibiades S. (G2)  at Keeneland. She dropped
that one and her next, the mile Pocahontas S. (G3) at Churchill Downs, but
returned with a bang when reverting in distance to 6 1/2 furlongs. Rallying from
near the back, Trick’s Pic took over in upper stretch and pulled off for a 5
1/4-length score in an allowance/optional claimer at Santa Anita. Jockey Tony
Farina, aboard for that last start, retains the mount.

The complete field for the Santa Ynez, with riders and weights, is Trick’s
Pic, 116; TALULLAH LULA (Old Trieste), Garrett Gomez, 114; MY LITTLE MONKEY (Old
Trieste), Jose Valdivia Jr., 114; Folklore, 123; LAKE COMO (Salt Lake), Isaias
Enriquez, 114; and DANCE DAILY (Five Star Day), Victor Espinoza, 114.

Folklore and Dance Daily will run coupled.
