Bay Shore S. (G3) by nine widening lengths. Set to rate
early by jockey Garrett Gomez in a short field of five, the gray colt trailed in
third through :22 2/5 behind One Way Flight (Precise End) before taking command
prior to the half-mile point in :45. Once finding fresh
air in front, the Bob Baffert trainee proved much the best as he cruised home
easily, completing seven furlongs in 1:22 2/5.
“I actually thought at the half-mile pole that he was getting a little
eager,” Gomez said. “When I turned for home, I smooched to him and sent him on
his way. He’s got a mind of his own. He’s got phenomenal speed. If he can keep
that bottled up and enjoy himself, he’s 10 times better.”
Too Much Bling returned $4.20, $2.50 and $2.10 for the victory while Songster
(Songandaprayer) rallied for the place at 3-2, giving back $2.70 and $2.10,
holding off One Way Flight (Precise End) by three parts of a length. Show
paid $2.80 at nearly 8-1 and the exotics returned $9.10 (exacta) and $19.60 for the
5-3-2 trifecta. Devil’s Concierge (Wild Rush) and Trailing Twelve (Five Star
Day) rounded out the order of finish.
“We’re just glad he’s a fast son of a gun,” Baffert said. “We’ll keep him at
one-turn races for now.”
Bred in Ohio by Destiny Farm, Too Much Bling is out of the stakes-winning
Rose Colored Lady (Formal Dinner), who has also produced multiple stakes
winners Barnsy (Langfuhr) and Ready for Roses (More than Ready) as well as an
unraced two-year-old filly named Littlebitabling (Carson City) and an unnamed
yearling filly by Langfuhr.
A winner of his last two, Too Much Bling now holds a record of 8-4-0-2 with
$282,674 in earnings. Among his other wins are scores in the San Vicente S. (G2)
and San Miguel S. He also placed third in last year’s Hopeful S. (G1).
