Montijeu colt tops DBS opener

Last updated: 4/11/06 8:24 PM

Doncaster Bloodstock Sales Company’s Breeze-Up kicked off Tuesday and Montjeu
(Ire) has begun the year strong, siring the day’s
highest-priced lot.

Malcom Bastard, who consigned this sale’s record-priced juvenile 12 months
ago, offered the session topper as Hip No. 48 and Ivan Allan went to 90,000
guineas to secure the half-brother to the useful multiple winner Little Good Bay
(Danehill) from the family of the prolific stakes producer Kingscote (Ire)
(King’s Lake).

There are a host of North American sires represented in this year’s
catalog, and throughout the afternoon their progeny proved in demand, with the
regally bred Dance Brightly responsible for the second-highest priced lot. David Redvers stepped in to purchase Jamie Railton’s Hip 28, a half-brother to the
Italian listed winner Tenderlit (Lit de Justice) from the family of the Hopeful
S. (G1) hero Great Navigator, for 77,000 guineas.

Roy Kvisla is the new name in Lambourn after the Norwegian-born trainer took
over the stables vacated by Manton-bound Brian Meehan during the winter. Having
established his reputation as one of Scandinavia’s best, he was looking to buy
into some juveniles to gain him respect in his new territory and splashed out
75,000 guineas to take home the session’s top-priced filly. By Mark of Esteem
(Ire), whose fortunes took an upturn in 2005 thanks to the exploits of his
Dewhurst S. (Eng-G1)-winning son Sir Percy, Mocklershill Stables’s Hip 100 is
out of a half to the smart stakes performer Lundy’s Lane.

While the first day’s average was narrowly down on last year, 2005 witnessed
a 34 percent jump. Selling concludes Wednesday. Full results can be found on
