Tattersalls’ Breeze-Up begins

Last updated: 4/18/06 7:53 PM

Tattersalls’ 18th Breeze-Up Sale, which begins after racing in Newmarket on
Wednesday, appears to be the strongest ever renewal on paper with some
eye-catching pedigrees to turn the heads of potential buyers. There are 206 lots
catalogued and the entries breezed before racing on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile
Tuesday morning. Despite agents such as John Ferguson, Angus Gold and Demi
O’Byrne being at the Inglis Easter Sale in Australia, there are some
high-profile figures in Newmarket this week, including members of the Maktoum
family, Coolmore partner Michael Tabor and representatives of the Yoshida
family.

“The breeze went extremely well, we have a top-class catalogue and I think we
saw some very smart two-year-olds on show this morning,” Tattersalls Marketing
Director Jimmy George said.

Willie Browne’s Mocklershill Stables in Co. Tipperary, who has long been one
of the event’s top vendors, has 24 lots catalogued this year. Many watching the
morning workout Tuesday felt that a Green Desert colt out of Park Hill S.
(Eng-G3) heroine Alexander Three D (Ire) (Pennekamp), Lot 128, could be not only
the star of Browne’s draft, but possibly the whole sale after his solo spin.
Bred by Castleton Lyons owner Dr. Tony Ryan, the colt had been bought in utero
when Alexander Three D was acquired for $1.7 million at Keeneland November in
2003. The youngster sold for 310,000gns at Tattersalls in October.

Lot 58, a Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) colt who cost Browne 165,000gns as a
yearling, also impressed in the workout, as did Lot 145, a Dynaformer colt who
was knocked down to Hartley/De Renzo for $150,000 at Keeneland’s September sale.
Con Marnane’s Bansha House Stables, whose draft 12 months ago included
subsequent Group 1 winners Amadeus Wolf (Mozart [Ire]) and Palace Episode
(Machiavellian), is another well-represented vendor. Lot 196, a Monashee
Mountain colt bought for just 30,000 at Fairyhouse in September, was among
Marnane’s standouts. Another was Lot 61, a well-connected El Prado (Ire) filly
who cost $110,000 at Keeneland seven months ago.

Catalogues are available for the two-day auction on www.tattersalls.com.
