Darley Stable’s SONGSTER (Songandaprayer) proved much the best Saturday in
the $100,000
Hirsch Jacobs S. (G3) at Pimlico. Pagan Moon (Malibu Moon) grabbed
the early advantage, but was not able to maintain that spot as Songster came up
quickly on the outside to take over the lead under jockey Edgar Prado. From
there, the black colt was able to repel all bids for the lead, clocking fractions
of :22 4/5 and :45 4/5 before completing the six-furlong event in 1:09 3/5 over a fast
track.

“He broke running out of the gate and it was all over,” Prado said. “He did
it all by himself. In a few strides he was clear of that other horse and
galloping along nice and easy. There was plenty left. He came back like he
didn’t even run.”

Sent off as the heavy 3-5 favorite, the Thomas Albertrani trainee returned
$3.20, $2.60 and $2.10. Valid Brush (Broad Brush) could only manage second at the wire, a nose ahead of Urban Guy (Marquetry), but still 10 lengths behind
the winner. Valid Brush paid $5.80 and $3.60 at 9-1 while the show gave back $3
at 5-1. Pagan Moon, Mike’sgoodandtough (Good and Tough) and We Miss You Nicko (A. P
Jet) rounded out the order of finish. Exotics returned $25.60 (exacta), $76.40 (trifecta)
and $73.20 for the 8-5-6-3 superfecta ($1). My Dynomite (Lite the Fuse) and
Rainbow Inthestorm (Storm Boot) were scratched from the race.

Songster was second last out in the Bay Shore S.
(G3) and now shows a record of 4-2-2-0 with $115,800 in earnings. He was
purchased at the 2004 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Yearling Sale for $200,000.

“That was impressive, very impressive,” Albertrani said. “He was
training a little better going into this race than the Bay Shore. Cutting back
in distance wasn’t going to be a problem. He’s got a lot of speed, so we
weren’t concerned about that at all. I just told Edgar ‘Let him run where he’s
comfortable.'”

Bred in Florida by Richard Giacopelli, Songster is the first registered foal
out of the unraced Peppy Lapeau (French Deputy), who has also produced an
unnamed two-year-old colt by Ecton Park, an unnamed yearling colt by Hussonet
and a 2006 colt by Lion Heart.
