Kentucky Derby (G1) hero BARBARO (Dynaformer) received the third selection in
Wednesday’s post position draw for Saturday’s $1 million Preakness S. (G1), and
trainer Michael Matz announced that the powerful dark bay will break from gate
6. The unbeaten colt was installed as the even-money favorite on the morning
line for the 131st running of the middle leg in the Triple Crown.
BROTHER DEREK (Benchmark) and SWEETNORTHERNSAINT (Sweetsouthernsaint) will
join him at in Baltimore from the Kentucky Derby, and there are six newcomers to
the Triple Crown. Multiple Grade 1 winner Brother Derek, the 3-1 second choice
on the morning line, will start from post 5 at Pimlico, and Illinois Derby (G2)
victor Sweetnorthernsaint, the third choice at 4-1, will leave from post 7. BERNARDINI (A.P. Indy), a convincing 3 3/4-length conqueror in the Withers S.
(G3) most recently and two-for-three overall, is a well-regarded addition to the
Triple Crown series at Old Hilltop. The Tom Albertrani trainee is 8-1 and will
start from post 8.
Gotham S. (G3) winner and Lexington S. (G2) runner-up LIKE NOW (Jules) will
also bring solid credentials into the 1 3/16-mile event. GREELEY’S LEGACY (Mr.
Greeley), DIABOLICAL (Artax), HEMINGWAY’S KEY (Notebook) and PLATINUM COUPLE
(Tale of the Cat) are all considered outsiders.
