Tattersalls September set to kick off

Last updated: 9/4/06 8:16 PM

With Deauville, Doncaster and Baden-Baden setting a demanding precedent with
solid renewals of their yearling sales, Tattersalls Ireland picks up the baton
as they start their three-day September Sale Tuesday. In the past 12 months, the
Fairyhouse auction’s graduates have done their own marketing, with 20,000
purchase Rising Cross (GB) (Cape Cross [Ire]) flying the flag when finishing
runner-up in the Epsom Oaks (Eng-G1). Unbeaten Sweet Solera S. (Eng-G3) heroine
English Ballet (Danehill Dancer) cost 70,000 as a yearling, and last Monday’s
listed Ripon Champion Two-Year-Old Trophy winner Stevie Gee (Invincible Spirit)
was an investment of just 32,000 last year.

Previous graduates include the 2004 Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1)
heroine Saoire (GB), multiple group and graded stakes winner Silver Cup (Ire) (Almutawakel
[GB]), top-class sprinter The Tatling, 2002 Dewhurst S. (Eng-G1) winner Tout
Seul and 2001 Yorkshire Oaks (Eng-G1) winner Super Tassa (Ire).

Among the top international sires represented in this 638-strong catalog are
Alhaarth, Anabaa, Cape Cross (Ire), Danehill Dancer, Galileo (Ire), Green
Desert, King’s Best, Medicean, Montjeu (Ire), Red Ransom, Royal Applause (GB)
and Singspiel (Ire), while those with their first two-year-olds on the track
this year include Invincible Spirit, Kyllachy, Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) and
Tobougg (Ire). Of the freshman sires with offerings, Acclamation, Chevalier,
Choisir, Dubai Destination, Hawk Wing, High Chaparral (Ire) and Statue of
Liberty help make up the first part of Tuesday’s opening session.

With the first 73 lots set aside for yearlings from first-crop sires, and the
remainder of the day entitled the “premier session,” the major action should be
almost immediate. Notable lots from the first-crop sires include Hip No. 6, a
filly by 2002 Coventry S. (Eng-G3) winner Statue of Liberty out of a half to
Parasol and Mot Juste (GB) from the draft of Rathbarry Stud; Ballyhane Stud’s
Hip 7, a filly by the top-class juvenile of 2001 Captain Rio out of a
listed-placed half to Celebration Mile S. (Eng-G2) winner Caradak (Desert
Style); and Hip 48, a filly by High Chaparral from the family of Star Pastures
offered by the Castlebridge Consignment.

Of the remainder, eyecatchers include Hip 116, a King Charlemagne
half-brother to the multiple group winner Democratic Deficit (Soviet Star) from
the Redmondstown Stud consignment; Castletown Stud’s Hip 126, a filly by Rock of
Gibraltar from the family of the great broodmare Hasili (Ire) (Kahyasi);
Castledillon Stud’s Hip 177, a half-sister by Montjeu to the smart Hong Kong
performer Sobriety; Hip 180, a filly by Fantastic Light out of a sister to the
top-class Sha Tha from the family of One Cool Cat offered by Glidawn Stud; Grove
Stud’s Hip 236, a Medicean filly out of a half to the multiple group winner
Aspectus (Spectrum) from the family of Fraulein (GB) (Acatengango) and Anna
Monda (Monsun); the Castlebridge consignment’s Hip 259, a half-sister by
Darley’s Queen Anne S. (Eng-G1) winner Dubai Destination to the listed winner
Swiss Lake (Indian Ridge); Hip 297, a Diktat half-sister to the smart stakes
performer Babodana from Ballylinch Stud; and Kildrum House’s Hip 360, a
half-sister to the multiple group-winning sprinter Glad to be Fast by Coolmore’s
2002 Phoenix S. (Ire-G1) winner Spartacus.

Hip 456 is a filly to have benefited from a late update, as the Medecis (GB)
offering from the Irish National Stud is a half to the aforementioned Stevie
Gee.

“We’re hopeful of a very good sale, as it’s the best catalog we’ve ever had
and the omens from Doncaster are good,” Tattersalls representative Simon Kerins
commented.
