Bay Meadows Derby

Last updated: 11/5/06 7:20 PM

Gary Tanaka’s PROUDINSKY (Ger) (Silvano [Ger]) took a short lead in the lane
and edged clear to a 1 1/4 length tally in the $100,000
Bay Meadows Derby (G3)
on Sunday. Conditioned by Bobby Frankel and ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, the
three-year-old colt rated off the pace early and began to inch closer to the
front runners around the turn and into the lane, where the colt proved best.
Sent off as the prohibitive 3-5 choice, Proudinsky completed the about nine
furlongs over good turf in 1:48 1/5 and gave back $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10.

Bold Chieftain (Chief Seattle) tracked the pace to the head of the stretch,
held a short lead turning for home and proved stubborn to pass in a game second-place performance. The second betting option
at 7-2 was good for $3.20 and $2.20
and finished off the $5.60 exacta ($1). Bedlam Bertie (Game Plan) led to the stretch
and stayed on well to garner show honors, worth $2.40 at nearly 9-1. The winning trifecta
($1) paid $19.10, and the (2-8-5-3) superfecta ($1) was worth $31 when 7-2 third
choice, the filly Illuminise (Ire) (Grand Lodge), finished fourth another 3 1/2 lengths in arrears. Raise the Bluff (Pine Bluff) and Sharper Edge (Snowbound) completed the
order of finish, while Passive Income (High Yield) and Dr. Einstein (Albert the
Great) scratched.

Proudinsky earned his first stakes win here, following a near-miss second in
the Arlington Classic S. (G3) three prior, and has amassed $147,871 in bankroll from
a 6-2-2-0 lifetime mark. The winner is out of Proudeyes (Dashing Blade) and was
preceded in stakes glory by his half-brother, Group 3 hero Proudance (Tannenkonig).
