Grade 1 winner SHARP LISA (Dixieland Band), cataloged as Hip No. 203, brought
a bid of $3.4 million to top the Fasig-Tipton November Selected Mixed Sale in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday. Consigned as a racing or broodmare prospect by
Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, the four-year-old chestnut filly was purchased
by BBA (Ireland) Limited.
Sharp Lisa captured the 2005 Las Virgenes S. (G1) and Santa Ynez S. (G2), and
this year she added a score in the grassy Santa Barbara H. (G2). Her resume
includes placings in the Vanity Invitational H. (G1), Hollywood Starlet S. (G1),
Alcibiades S. (G2) and La Canada S. (G2). She is exiting a sixth-place finish in
Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), and her scorecard stands at 18-4-2-2,
$658,100.
Sharp Lisa’s dam, the Dynaformer mare Winter’s Gone, is herself a half-sister
to four-time Grade 1 hero Bien Bien (Manila), multiple Grade 3 winner Dr.
Schwartzman (Fluorescent Light) and stakes victress and Grade 3-placed Fantasy
Lover (Raja Baba).
Last year’s Kentucky Oaks (G1) heroine, SUMMERLY (Summer Squall), was acquired
by WinStar Farm LLC for $3.3 million as a racing or broodmare prospect. The four-year-old
filly entered the ring as Hip 225 from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent.
As a sophomore, Summerly also garnered the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) and
Silverbulletday S. (G3) while placing in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1)
and Mother Goose S. (G1). This season, she won the Ashado S. and finished
seventh in the October 8 Spinster S. (G1) in her latest effort. Summerly was
pre-entered to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff but failed to draw into the field. Out
of multiple Grade 3-placed Here I Go (Mr. Prospector), she has compiled an
overall mark of 13-6-1-2, $891,633.
The next most expensive seller was Hip 102, HOOKEDONTHEFEELIN (Citidancer),
who went to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings for $2.9 million. In foal to
Distorted Humor on a May 10 cover, the 10-year-old mare was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency,
agent, as part of the ClassicStar LLC Dispersal.
A Grade 1 winner who earned $488,554 in her racing career, Hookedonthefeelin
has produced multiple Grade 1 victress Pussycat Doll (Real Quiet), last seen
winning the Humana Distaff H. (G1) in May. Hookedonthefeelin is out of the
stakes-winning Prospective Joy (Allen’s Prospect).
Jon Kelly snapped up undefeated Grade 1 victress VACARE (Lear Fan) for $2.8
million from the consignment of Chesapeake Farm (Drew Nardiello), agent. The
three-year-old filly took the October 14 Queen Elizabeth II Invitational
Challenge Cup S. (G1) at Keeneland last time out to improve her record to a
perfect four-for-four with $466,000 in earnings. Touring the ring as Hip 241,
Vacare was sold as a racing or broodmare prospect.
Produced by the winning Appealing Storm (Valid Appeal), Vacare comes from the
same female line as champion and $3.2-million earner Serena’s Song (Rahy), who
is herself the dam of Group 1 queen Sophisticat (Storm Cat), Grade 2 victors
Grand Reward (Storm Cat) and Harlington (Unbridled) as well as multiple stakes
winner Serena’s Tune (Mr. Prospector).
My Meadowview Farm secured Grade 2 heroine and multiple Grade 1-placed ANDUJAR
(Quiet American) as a broodmare prospect for $2.5 million. Offered by Taylor
Made Sales Agency, agent, the five-year-old mare was cataloged as Hip 135.
Produced by the stakes-winning Nureyev’s Best (Nureyev), Andujar is a half-sister
to the dam of multiple stakes winner Going Wild (Golden Missile) from the family of
champion Real Quiet (Quiet
American), hero of the 1998 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness S. (G1), and
multiple Grade/Group 2 winner Allied Forces (Miswaki).
Two-time stakes winner WIN’S FAIR LADY (Dehere), Hip 250, was also purchased by
My Meadowview Farm, going for $2.3 million from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, as part of the ClassicStar
LLC Dispersal. The seven-year-old mare is in foal to Unbridled’s Song on an
April 7 cover. Out of Grade 3 victress Win Crafty Lady (Crafty Prospector), she
is a full sister to multiple Grade 2 victor and young sire Graeme Hall, as well
as a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Harmony Lodge (Hennessy) and recent Floral
Park H. (G3) heroine Win McCool (Giant’s Causeway).
Hip 114, Group 3 queen KAMARINSKAYA (Storm
Cat), attracted a bid of $2.2 million from Skara Glen Stables. The
three-year-old filly was consigned by Eaton Sales as a racing or broodmare
prospect. As a daughter of the unraced Mr. P’s
Princess (Mr. Prospector), she is a half-sister to English, Irish and French
highweight and current sire Fasliyev (Nureyev). The second dam is stakes winner
and 1999 Broodmare of the Year Anne Campbell (Never Bend), producer of Grade 1 heroes Menifee (Harlan) and
Desert Wine (Damascus).
Several notable sale entrants failed to reach their reserve, including: Hip
100, Grade 1 heroine HONEY RYDER (Lasting Approval), third in Saturday’s
Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1), who RNA’ed for $1.8 million; three-time
Grade 1 winner ISLAND FASHION (Petionville), Hip 108, who RNA’ed for $2 million;
and Hip 30, BELVA (Theatrical [Ire]), the dam of multiple
Grade 1 winner English Channel (Smart Strike), third in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Turf
(G1), who also RNA’ed for $2 million.
Beverly D. S. (G1) heroine GORELLA (Fr) (Grape Tree Road [GB]), seventh in
Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), was withdrawn from the sale.
The one-day sale enjoyed massive increases compared to last year’s figures,
with gross receipts and median prices essentially doubling. On Sunday, 170
horses sold for a total of $64,130,000, representing a jump of 99.3 percent
above the $32,183,000 realized by 112 horses in 2005. The average shot up 31.3
percent, from $287,348 to $377,235, while the median skyrocketed to $175,000, up
103.5 percent from $86,000 a year ago.
