Saturday’s $300,000 Carter H. (G1) features a terrific match-up between KEYED
ENTRY (Honour and Glory) and LATENT HEAT (Maria’s Mon). The other five entrants
aren’t shabby, but we’re looking forward to the meeting of these two outstanding
sprinters. Keyed Entry is the only one of the two with experience over the
track, finishing a close third in last year’s Wood Memorial (G1), and the Todd
Pletcher-trained colt could be much more dangerous at seven furlongs. He opened his
2007 season with an excellent five-length score in the 6 1/2-furlong Deputy
Minister H. (G3) at Gulfstream, easily defeating next out Dubai Golden Shaheen
(UAE-G1) winner Kelly’s Landing (Patton) in the process, and he’s earned huge
BRIS Speed ratings in his career. Keyed Entry is well drawn in post 7, and we’ll
give the front runner the edge over his California rival.

Latent Heat recorded a stylish two-length score in the seven-furlong Malibu
S. (G1) two starts back, registering a 104 Speed rating, and the Bobby Frankel
pupil exits a nice win in the San Carlos H. (G2) at the same distance, earning
another commendable Speed number of 102. The stalker figures to be sitting a
perfect trip just off a wicked early pace, and he appears to be training well
for this start. David Flores picks up the mount aboard the very dangerous colt,
and Latent Heat could prove impossible to withstand in the stretch.

SILVER WAGON (Wagon Limit) will be running late under Javier Castellano and
brings good form into this event, posting a 109 Speed rating for his 1
1/4-length score in the General George Breeders’ Cup H. (G2) last out. The
Richard Dutrow-conditioned gray recorded a 5 1/2-length triumph in the Sport
Page Breeders’ Cup H. (G3) over the track and distance three starts back, and
the six-year-old shows BRIS Late Pace ratings of 114 and 113 in his recent
starts. Silver Wagon is a dangerous late threat.

DIABOLICAL (Artax) exits a solid third behind Half Ours (Unbridled’s Song) in
the Richter Scale Breeders’ Cup Sprint Championship H. (G2), and the Steve Klesaris trainee may
continue to develop into a top-notch sprinter this season. The four-year-old
didn’t begin concentrating upon sprints until three starts back, and he’s
probably not yet good enough to handle his main rivals here.

AH DAY (Malibu Moon) finished well for the place behind Silver Wagon in the
General George, but the
top-class Maryland performer will be making his first start in New York. We’ll
just watch to see how the King Leatherbury runner fares.

WILD JAM (Forest Wildcat) is probably facing too much of a
class hike. The nine-year-old KAZOO (Tabasco Cat) will likely be scratched after
running third in an allowance/optional claiming event on Thursday.
