Champion juvenile STREET SENSE (Street Cry [Ire]), a major contender for the
May 5 Kentucky Derby (G1), sizzled five furlongs on a fast track at Churchill
Downs on Wednesday. The dark bay colt covered the distance in a bullet :58 2/5
under jockey Calvin Borel, who was in the saddle when Street Sense scored his
record-breaking 10-length victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) over the
same surface last November. The Carl Nafzger trainee is expected to make his
next start in the $750,000 Blue Grass S. (G1) on April 14 at Keeneland. The
track had been rated good earlier in the morning following overnight rains.

“I was more interested in the way he handled the work than the time, and he
did it very easy,” Nafzger said. “He went the first quarter in :24, the last
quarter in :22, and galloped out strongly.”

“He was awesome,” Borel said. “The horse is just getting better and better.
Carl’s got him on the right road and you just couldn’t ask for any better. He
wanted a good work in him this morning and he was there. He did it happy. He
galloped out strong and I really didn’t squeeze no buttons or nothing — he was
just there for me.”

In his only start this year, Street Sense defeated Any Given Saturday
(Distorted Humor) by a nose in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 17.
