Racing at Monmouth Park on Breeders’ Cup Saturday kicks off with the $250,000 Pegasus S.
(G3), a 1 1/8-mile contest featuring seven three-year-old colts and geldings.
The undefeated NOW A VICTOR (Yankee Victor) is lightly raced, but could prove
to be an upset factor. Having only two starts under his girth, the Michael
Trombetta charge looks to go off at a fair price. The sophomore colt has shown
plenty of talent in those two races, earning a BRIS Speed rating of 101 when
breaking his maiden at first asking at Saratoga in August. Ramon Dominguez has
the call.
HELSINKI (Distorted Humor) was the best of the rest in the Travers S. (G1),
coming home third as Street Sense (Street Cry [Ire]) and Grasshopper (Dixie Union)
dueled it out 10 3/4 lengths ahead of him. He turned in another bronze
performance in the Brooklyn H. (G2) to Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor). The
dark bay drops in class here and should be able to run as well if not better on
Saturday. Julien Leparoux will ride.
GET SERIOUS (City Zip) is another longshot (12-1 on the morning line) who
deserves notice. He comes off a disappointing seventh-place finish against
allowance/optional claiming company last month, but we can chalk that up to an
awkward start by the chestnut. Trainer Pat McBurney will be adding blinkers for
this one, which could force the colt to get serious. He started his career at
Monmouth and should enjoy running over his home track, posting a bullet
four-furlong drill in :47 1/5 on October 16.
BWANA BULL (Holy Bull) looked promising at the beginning of the year, but hasn’t
visited the winner’s circle since March at Bay Meadows. The chestnut has had a couple of close calls,
though, so we will
recommend for the exotics. STUNT MAN (Western Expression) captured two listed
stakes, one versus New York-breds, prior to a non-factor finish in the Jerome H.
(G2). We’ll pass.
SLEW’S TIZZY (Tiznow) had his name thrown around during Triple Crown season,
but he has proven an unreliable bet since his victory in the Lone Star Derby
(G3) in May. ACTIN GOOD (Yes It’s True) exits a good score versus allowance
rivals at Suffolk Downs, but the quality of competition will be much better on
Saturday and we don’t see him playing a role here.
