The 1 1/8-mile Discovery H. (G3) drew seven three-year-olds, and we’ll side
with BUFFALO MAN (El Prado [Ire]). A two-time stakes winner going two turns, the
Cam Gambolati runner recorded a solid second to C P West (Came Home) in the
one-mile Wild Again S. when making his Aqueduct debut last out, which was also
his return from an eight-month layoff. The bay colt
will stretch out in distance on Saturday with regular rider Joe Bravo, and
Buffalo Man owns terrific BRIS Late Pace ratings, notching century-topping
numbers in four of his last five outings. Given his sharp present form, Buffalo
Man could prove impossible to deny in the Discovery.
NOW A VICTOR (Yankee Victor) is obviously a big threat. A winner in his first
two outings, the Michael Trombetta runner just missed when making his stakes
debut in the Pegasus S. (G3) on the Breeders’ Cup undercard, finishing second by
a neck. Now a Victor has worked well since, posting a five-furlong bullet move
last Saturday at Laurel Park, and he’ll be up close to the pace before offering
his rally under John Velazquez.
HELSINKI (Distorted Humor) brings respectable credentials into the race,
finishing third in the Travers (G1) and Brooklyn H. (G2), but the late-running
plodder hasn’t been a win threat since capturing a non-winners of one other than
allowance at Delaware Park in early June. He appears capable of rallying for
another minor award in this spot.
NOTICE ME NOW (Unbridled Time) captured a $40,000 claiming race in June and
has not had much success against stakes competition. The Patricia Farro charge
owns a winning attitude, taking five of his last nine starts, and remains one to
consider for the exotics at nice odds.
DR. V’S MAGIC (Raffie’s Majesty) will enter this event on the upswing for
Dominic Galluscio, winning the Empire Classic H. over fellow New York-breds most
recently, but he’ll be tested for class here. We’ll just watch to see how he
fares in his first attempt versus open rivals.
SHOPTON RAIL (Quiet American) will likely show speed from the rail, but we
can’t envision him sustaining it. PORT ROYAL (Giant’s Causeway) switched from
turf to dirt to win a six-furlong maiden special weight last time out. The
chestnut colt faces a class check here.
