Numbers nosedive at
Fasig-Tipton Kentucky

Monday’s opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale at
Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Kentucky, posted steep declines across the board.
A total of 182 horses brought in gross receipts of $2,173,100, a 58.9 percent
plunge from opening day last year, when $5,286,800 was realized by 297
yearlings. The average plummeted 32.9 percent, from $17,801 to $11,940, while
the median was halved, from $10,000 to $5,000.

A filly by Grand Slam sold for the top price of $115,000 to Sunrise Stable
South. Cataloged as Hip No. 197, the dark bay was consigned by Gainesway, agent.
The session-topper is the second foal from the Deputy Minister mare Pout, and
her second dam is the multiple stakes-winning Bedroom Blues (Cure the Blues).
This is the family of Past the Point (Indian Charlie), runner-up to Horse of the
Year Curlin (Smart Strike) in the August 30 Woodward S. (G1).

The only other yearling to bring six figures was Hip 37, a Forest Wildcat
colt who attracted a winning bid of $100,000 from P. Miller, agent for Darkside.
The chestnut is the first foal from the winning Mazel Tov Betty (Mazel Trick), a
half-sister to multiple stakes queens Somethinaboutbetty (Forestry) and Petunia
(Lil E. Tee), and hails from the family of Grade 1 heroine My Trusty Cat (Tale
of the Cat). The colt was offered by Baccari Bloodstock, agent.

The three-day auction continues Tuesday, beginning at 10 a.m. (EDT). For more
