Blind Luck noses out Havre de Grace in Delaware Oaks

Mark Dedomenico LLC, John Carver, Peter Abruzzo and Jerry Hollendorfer’s
BLIND LUCK (Pollard’s Vision) broke a step slow in Saturday’s $263,200
Delaware
Oaks (G2)
and belatedly settled in last of the 8 1/2-furlong affair. That
didn’t affect the Hollendorfer trainee, though, as the three-year-old miss
regularly utilizes a come-from-behind running style. It cost her in the
Hollywood Oaks (G2) last out, but in this sloppy, sealed, dirt test the chestnut
managed to get her nose down on the wire to win under jockey Joel Rosario.

Derwin’s Star (Wildcat Heir) took the lead in the Delaware Oaks, setting
splits of :23 4/5, :48, 1:12 2/5 and 1:37 while tracked by Havre de Grace (Saint Liam)
to her outside. Blind Luck was as much as 7 1/2 lengths behind the leader on the
backstretch, but began picking off rivals as the field neared the final turn.
Closing wide down the center of the track before angling back toward the inside,
the Grade 1-winning filly hooked up with Havre de Grace and just got the nose
bob on the wire to stop the clock in 1:43 1/5.

Sent off the 1-5 favorite, Blind Luck was worth $2.40, $2.20 and $2.10 while
keying the $10.60 exacta, $42.80 trifecta and $63.80 superfecta (5-7-1-2). Havre
de Grace was in front right before and right after the wire, but was forced to
settle for second as the 6-1 third choice. She paid $3.60 and $2.80. It was
another 1 1/2 lengths back to Derwin’s Star, who gave back $4.60 as the 12-1
fourth pick.

No Such Word (Canadian Frontier), Worship the Moon (Malibu Moon), Calypso Queen (Roar of the Tiger)
and Listen In (Wiseman’s Ferry) completed the order under the wire.

Blind Luck has now recorded six stakes triumphs while racking up a 12-8-2-2
career line. Among her victories are the Kentucky Oaks (G1), Las Virgenes S.
(G1) and Fantasy S. (G1) from this year as well as the Hollywood Starlet S. (G1)
and Oak Leaf S. (G1) from her juvenile campaign. She’s placed in four other
graded events, including the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies (G1), and has accumulated $1,578,712 in lifetime earnings. All of this
has taken place over both synthetic tracks and conventional dirt surfaces, on
tracks crisscrossing the country from coast to coast.

Bred by Fairlawn Farm in Kentucky, Blind Luck passed through the sales ring
twice, bringing $11,000 as a Fasig-Tipton July yearling and RNAing for $10,000
at the OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The chestnut lass
is the first registered foal out of the winning Lucky One (Best of Luck), who
has since produced an unnamed juvenile colt by Orientate and 2010 filly by
Successful Appeal.

Lucky One is a half-sister to 2002 Swale S. (G3) hero Ethan Man (Glitterman),
while her dam, Twilight Spectre (Imp Society), is herself a half-sibling to
multiple Grade 2 victor Chas Conerly (Big Burn) and multiple Grade 3-placed
Gainzer (Turkoman). Also of note in the family is Burn’s Return (Big Burn),
queen of the 1979 Monmouth Oaks (G1).
