Size upsets Ria Antonia in Iowa Oaks

Last updated: 6/29/14 1:36 PM

Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider’s homebred Size outran her 13-1 odds
Saturday night at Prairie Meadows for a 1 1/4-length victory in the Grade 3,
$200,000
Iowa Oaks
under jockey Junior Alvarado. The chestnut miss was making her
graded debut in the 1 1/16-mile contest and paid $28 for stopping the clock in
1:43 over the sloppy main track.

Size was quickest from the gate and set the opening quarter in :23 2/5 before
falling back to let Dream Spinner lead the way through a half in :46 3/5 and
three-quarters in 1:10 4/5. In the stretch, Size was just a head back while 2-1
favorite Ria Antonio had rallied to be third. The duo passed the tiring Dream
Spinner, but Size was going best of all and got the win for trainer Bill Mott.

Ria Antonia had a half-length to spare over Dream Spinner on the wire, while
Tiz Windy was another three lengths back in fourth. Completing the order of
finish were Awesome Jill, Senior Prom, Thank You Marylou and Designer Legs.
Sugar Shock was pulled up at the quarter-mile marker.

Size captured her initial two starts, breaking her maiden by a neck at
Gulfstream Park in March and taking an optional claimer by a length at Aqueduct
one month later. The First Samurai filly made her stakes bow in the Jersey Girl
at Belmont Park on May 26, finishing second on that occasion, and now boasts a
4-3-1-0, $200,600, career mark with the Iowa Oaks score.

The Kentucky-bred miss is the first registered stakes scorer out of the
winning Pulpit mare Extent. That one is herself a daughter of Grade 3-placed
stakes victress Limit, who also produced Grade 1-placed stakes hero Cease and
Grade 3-placed stakes diva Total.

Size’s third dam is Grade 1-placed stakes vixen Bound, who would go on in the
breeding shed to foal multiple Group 1 winner Archipenko as well as the dam of
champion older male, Breeders’ Cup Classic star and multiple Grade 1-winning
millionaire Blame. Bound is also the third dam of Carve, who won the Prairie
Meadows Cornhusker Handicap two races after the Iowa Oaks.

Size’s fourth dam is blue-hen mare Special, from whom is descended champion
sires Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev.
