Keeneland September finishes with across-the-board gains

The 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale concluded its 12-day run Saturday with business up across the board. Final figures showed 2,555 horses sold for $307,845,400, an increase of 12.8 percent over last year’s gross of $272,890,500 generated from the sale of 2,792 yearlings over 13 days.

The sale’s average and median also showed increases. The average rose 23.3 percent, from $97,740 to $120,487, an all-time record for the September sale, while the median was up 42.5 percent, from $40,000 to $57,000.

The top horse at the final session was Hip No. 4123, a Take Charge Indy colt gaveled down to Shortleaf Stable for $85,000. Consigned by Heaven Trees, agent, the April 20 Kentucky-bred is out of Croon, by Indian Charlie, and is a half-brother to Grade 2-place Laney.

At the conclusion of trading Saturday, 135 yearlings had sold for $1,467,800. The average was $10,873 and the median $7,000.
