Robert D. Bone’s DESERT BOOM (Boomerang) recorded a gate-to-wire victory on
Saturday while taking on six rivals in the $100,000
Berkeley H. (G3) at Golden
Gate Fields. Leading through splits of :22 4/5, :45 2/5, 1:09 and 1:34 1/5, the
Art Sherman-trained five-year-old finished 8 1/2 furlongs on the fast dirt in
1:40 4/5, coming in two lengths ahead of his nearest rival.

With Roberto Gonzalez in the irons, Desert Boom paid $12.60, $6.60 and $4 as
the 5-1 third choice, keying $1 exotics of $30.90 (exacta) and $173.90
(trifecta). Easy Million (Jade Hunter) easily held second, finishing six lengths
ahead of Yougottawanna (Candi’s Gold) to return $6.60 and $4.80 at 5-1. Show was
worth $5.20 at 6-1. Smoocher (Kissin Kris) just missed third by a nose and was
followed under the wire by Mambo Train (Kingmambo), Skipaslew (Skip Away) and
Best Minister (Deputy Minister).

Desert Boom earned his first stakes win in this spot and now shows a
32-13-2-5 line to go along with $391,920 in lifetime earnings. The dark bay
gelding, bred in California by Van Mar Farms, is out of the winning Sand Dance
(Desert Wine) and has a yearling full sister named Marilyn’s Boomer.
