WINNING WITH WORKOUTS

JUNE 10, 2005

In this regular weekly feature, Handicapper’s Report will present examples of
how to use workouts in your handicapping using actual results with horses
featured in our reports. To access the HR reports and to see the highlights of

Today’s Topic: Look for wake up works with first time starters

Occasionally, a trainer will find the secret to a debuting horse after a long
series of moderate works (or he simply employs equipment for a final workout
that the horse responds positively to). If the final good workout is not
accomplished in a flashy time, there is an opportunity to catch a nice price.

On Wednesday at Churchill Downs in the 5TH race, first-time starter RASCAL
CREEK (Storm Creek) had run up a couple of months of OK Grade B- and C+ works
followed by a final work that drew a Grade B from our clocker with the comment
“Hard held all the way in :25.2 and :49.4 with a good run down the lane in
:24.2.” Similar final time to those he had been running, but a significantly
different comment.

Rascal Creek broke well and ran on the lead before pulling away in the
stretch to win and pay $42.80. Our other two decent workers in the race ran 2-3
for a trifecta of $230.
