Doncaster gets underway

Last updated: 8/29/06 7:55 PM

Doncaster Bloodstock Sales Company’s three-day St Leger Yearling Sale got
underway Tuesday, with a colt and filly sharing top honors at 130,000 guineas
apiece.

BBA Ireland took home the session’s top-priced colt in securing Glenvale
Stud’s Hip No. 100, a son of Danetime who is closely related to this year’s Wokingham
H. winner Baltic King (Danetime), who provided the sale’s latest update on
Sunday when capturing the listed Beverley Bullet S.

Later in the afternoon, Willie McKay was spending some of the riches reaped
by his star sprinter, Golden Jubilee S. (Eng-G1) and July Cup (Eng-G1) winner Les Arcs
(Arch), when paying the same amount for Hip 151, a filly
by Medicean. Consigned by David Brown’s Furnace Mill Stud on behalf of Slatch
Farm Stud, she is a half to a stakes-placed runner from the family of the 1998
Richmond S. (Eng-G2) winner Muqtarib.

As the day’s trading drew to a close, Hugo Merry Bloodstock made a final bid of 80,000 guineas to obtain Ash Tree
Farm’s Hip 165, a colt by Titus Livius (Fr). The half-brother to the useful
sprint handicapper Bond City (Trans Island) is from the family of stakes-winning
speedsters Sampower Star (Cyrano de Bergerac), Fire Up the Band (Prince Sabo) and Strike Up the Band
(Cyrano de Bergerac).

Peter Doyle and, more recently, his son Ross, are Leger Sale regulars and the
family’s operation was on hand once again to pay 75,000 guineas for Hip 137, a
colt by Averti from the draft of Paul and Sarah Thorman’s Trickledown Stud.
Shadwell have become supporters of this sale in recent seasons and Angus Gold
was busy earlier in the day when buying two lots for 70,000 guineas.

The first was Monksgrange Stud’s Hip 43, a colt by the hot freshman sire
Invincible Spirit. Gold later secured Hip 72, a Royal Applause (GB) half-brother
to Saturday’s Bernard Baruch H. (G2) hero Ashkal Way (Ire) (Ashkalani) from the
draft of John Osborne.

While comparative figures are not available as the sale has been shortened to
three from four days, the 91 percent clearance rate and 28,949 guineas average
gave the sale’s opener a healthy appearance.
