Ferguson goes to €950,000 to secure Goffs Orby topper

John Ferguson purchased the €950,000 sales topper on day 2 of Goffs Orby
Sale. Kilcarn Stud’s daughter of Dubawi out of Group 2 runner-up Spirit of Tara
(Sadler’s Wells) entered the sale as Lot No. 386 and is a three-quarter sister
to Echo of Light (GB) (Dubai Millennium).

That runner topped the 2003 Orby Sale, where he was also bought by Ferguson
for €1.2 million. Echo of Light would go on to capture five group events during
his career, including the Prix Daniel Wildenstein (Fr-G2), and placed in the
Premio Vittorio di Capua (Ity-G1).

Cahermorris Stables’ 2005 Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) winner Saoire
(GB) (Pivotal), who was dam of last year’s Orby sales topper, saw her Invincible
Spirit colt realize €550,000 when falling to John Magnier. The colt sported Lot
354 from the Cahermorris Stables consignment.

Magnier also secured the next highest price when going to €260,000 for a
Galileo son of another Irish One Thousand Guineas winner in Tarascon (Tirol).
Glenvale Stud offered the bay colt as Lot 408.

“Quality horses have sold very well, the market has been slightly more
selective but the Irish breeders who brought their best horses here have been
rewarded,” Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby said about the trade thus far.

The sale is down slightly in numbers compared to this point last year. A
total of 305 horses have brought €19,952,000 with an average of €65,416 and a
€45,000 median. The 2009 numbers came to €22,152,000 for 326 horses, with a
€67,951 average and €50,000 median.
