Built Up tears down Spend a Buck field

Raymond Susi’s BUILT UP (Homebuilder) held off a late charge
from Super Frolic (Pine Bluff) to take the $100,000 Spend A Buck
H. (G3)
at Calder on Saturday by a head. The six-year-old gelding
remained just off the pace for much of the 1 1/16-mile contest
before angling three-wide turning for home and holding off the
fast-closing Super Frolic to stop the teletimer at 1:45 4/5.

“(Built Up) ran the way I expected,” Coa said.
“Always, when he takes the lead, he hangs and waits for
horses. That’s what he did today, but he held on to win.”

Sent off at 5-2, the Enrique Alonso trainee rated off honest
fractions of :23 4/5, :48, and 1:13 before a mile in 1:38 4/5.
Turning for home, Eibar Coa and his mount fended off Puck (Mr.
Greeley) and Hear No Evil (Carson City) to move to the fore but
had to fight tooth and nail to stay a head in front of Super
Frolic at the wire.

The winner returned $7.20, $4, and $4.20 while keying a $23.60
exacta. Super Frolic came next, giving back $3.80 to place and
show at nearly 3-1. Gold Dollar (Seattle Slew) completed the top
three, paying $6.60 at 13-1 while finishing a $140.40 trifecta (1-2-6).
Twilight Road (Cahill Road), who left the gate as the 2-1
favorite, placed just off the board, rounding out a $358.80
superfecta (1-2-6-7).

Completing the order of finish were Hear No Evil, Black Mambo
(Kingmambo), Puck, Dependable Herbie (Robyn Dancer), Big Luck (Per)
(Short Selling), Dancing Guy (Robyn Dancer) and Predawn Raid (Sir
Cat).

Built Up now holds a record of 46-14-7-8 to accompany lifetime
earnings of $758,518 and was purchased at the Fasig-Tipton
Midlantic July sale for $10,000. He is out of the unraced Herat
mare Toned Up and has an unnamed weanling full brother.
