Live Oak Plantation’s homebred HESANOLDSALT (Broad Brush) launched a winning
move on the far turn and drew off late to win Saturday’s $100,000
Fred W.
Hooper H. (G3)
at Calder. The Nick Zito-trained three-year-old colt
notched his first stakes win with the 3 1/4-length decision, completing 1 1/8
miles over the sloppy, sealed track in 1:51 4/5, and he provided Rafael Bejarano with
the first of two stakes wins on the Grand Slam II program.

Siphon City (Siphon [Brz]) sprinted to the lead and opened up by a sizable
margin while establishing quick splits in :22 1/5 and :46. Hesanoldsalt sat a
perfect stalking trip in second from his rail post and launched a visually
impressive move on the far turn to overhaul the pacesetter, storming into the
stretch with about a two-length cushion after completing six panels in 1:12 1/5.
Rehoboth (Wagon Limit) and Dry Martini (Slew Gin Fizz) both rallied into a
threatening position leaving the far turn and remained in striking contention
until midstretch, but Hesanoldsalt found more along the rail in the final
sixteenth of a mile to win going away.

Favored at 2-1, the winner returned $6.40, $3.60 and $3.40 while keying
the $29.80 exacta with 7-2 third choice Rehoboth, who edged 18-1 Dry Martini for
the place by three-quarters of a length and paid $3.80 and $3. Show was good for
$7.40. The trifecta totaled $246.20, and the 1-9-10-5 superfecta with 8-1 Big
Lover (Ecton Park) was $1,458. Dazzling Dr. Cevin (Cutlass Fax), Sir Jackie (Sweetsouthernsaint),
Supervisor (Skip Trial), B. B. Best (Yes It’s True), We Can Seek (Chi) (Seeker’s
Reward) and Itsawonderfulife (Skip Away) completed the order of finish. Siphon City wound up being eased.

Out of the winning Salty Gal (Cox’s Ridge), Hesanoldsalt is a full brother to
2002 Donn H. (G1) winner and sire Mongoose. The Kentucky-bred also has a
yearling half-sister named U S Treasury (Seeking the Gold). Third in the Pegasus
S. (G3) and Coronado’s Quest S. earlier this year, the dark bay colt has now
earned $267,738 from a 14-4-1-3 line.

“This race encourages us to hope we might have a nice four-year-old next
year,” Zito said. “We might bring him back in the Hal’s Hope (H. [G3]) (on
January 6) at Gulfstream. Then, you might find out whether he could take the
next step up to a race like the Donn (on February 3).”
