Saturday’s $2 million Mile (G1) features a contentious field of 14,
including a pair of European invaders in JEREMY (Danehill Dancer) and EXCELLENT
ART (GB) (Pivotal). We’ll use both in our top three, but we’re selecting NOBIZ
LIKE SHOBIZ (Albert the Great) for top honors.

Nobiz Like Shobiz has finished off the board only once in his career
(Michael J. Marten/Horsephotos.com)

Trained by Barclay Tagg, Nobiz Like Shobiz displayed class at two when
recording an excellent second in the Champagne S. (G1) and a 6 1/2-length score
in the Remsen S. (G2). Rated as an early Kentucky Derby (G1) favorite, the bay
colt garnered the Wood Memorial (G1) and Holy Bull S. (G3), with a close third
in the Fountain of Youth (G2) as well, prior to a 10th in the Kentucky Derby
(G1). He raced but once more over the dirt, finishing second in July’s Dwyer S.
(G2), before making the switch to his best surface.

Nobiz Like Shobiz made his turf bow in the National Museum of Racing Hall of
Fame S. (G2) at Saratoga, rallying to win by a half-length, and gamely captured
the Kent Breeders’ Cup S. (G3) at Delaware Park next out. He really put on a
show last time in the Jamaica H. (G2), dominating the nine-furlong affair with a
four-length decision, and registered a strong 102 BRIS Speed rating for the
effort. The three-year-old has registered triple-digit Late Pace numbers in all
three turf appearances, and Nobiz Like Shobiz is a classy individual with the
talent to knock off these rivals. He’s well drawn in post nine with new jockey
John Velazquez.

Jeremy is conditioned by three-time Breeders’ Cup race winner Sir Michael
Stoute, and the four-year-old will be reunited with six-time Breeders’ Cup
winner Frankie Dettori, who guided the colt to a victory in the Sandown Mile S.
(Eng-G2) the last time he was aboard. A top-class campaigner in England, Jeremy
can handle turf with give to it, but he caught a course that was too soft for
his liking last time in a French Group 1 event. Three starts back in the Queen
Anne S. (Eng-G1), he ran well enough to score (cost himself the win when veering
out in the stretch) before falling a nose short to Ramonti (Martino Alonso).
Jeremy followed that commendable effort with a good third behind the same rival
in the Sussex S. (Eng-G1) next out. Those performances put Jeremy right in the
mix here, and we’ve got a lot of respect for his connections. Don’t be surprised
to see Jeremy challenge for it all.

Excellent Art drew a tough post (13), but can’t be dismissed from win
consideration. Hero of the St James’s Palace S. (Eng-G1) three starts back, the
Aidan O’Brien runner will enter the Mile off a pair of close seconds in the
Queen Elizabeth II (Eng-G1) and Sussex. He’s a deep closer who will have to deal
with a tight seven-furlong course at Monmouth Park, but Excellent Art always
seems to be in the thick of things regardless of circumstances. The
three-year-old colt looks like a major player on paper, but there’s a chance
he’ll leave himself with too much to do in the stretch run.

TRIPPI’S STORM (Trippi) closed boldly to capture the Kelso H. (G2) last out,
earning his first stakes victory in the process, and the Stan Hough pupil earned
strong BRIS numbers for the half-length decision. The four-year-old gelding
didn’t make his stakes bow until four starts back in mid-July, and he’d been
competing at longer distances prior to cutting back for the one-mile Kelso.
Trippi’s Storm appears to have found a home at eight furlongs, and he’ll enter
the Mile on the upswing. This represents a major class test, but we’ll include
the improving gelding in multi-race wagers.

REMARKABLE NEWS (Ven) (Chayim) scares us. Post 14 appeared to be a death
sentence on Tuesday, but the front runner captured the Dixie S. (G2) from the
far outside (post 11) — sprinting to the front and getting over to the rail
early — and he might be able to employ similar tactics on Saturday. The
five-year-old needed his last race, a very respectable fourth in the Woodbine
Mile (Can-G1) off a layoff, and we won’t be surprised to see a career best on
the front end from the classy performer. Listed at 12-1 on the morning line with
Ramon Dominguez, Remarkable News looms as a viable upsetter with his speed.

SILENT NAME (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) isn’t a serious contender, but he’s going
to be a huge price and will bring some attributes into this spot. A multiple
Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed, the five-year-old will enter this
event fresh for his new conditioner Bobby Frankel, who excels with horses
switching to his barn and making their first start off an extended layoff.
Silent Name appears to be working well for his return, and he gets the services
of a “big-money” rider in Kent Desormeaux. We’re going to use him on the bottom
of some gimmicks.

Former rabbit Icy Atlantic has earned his chance at glory
(Michael J. Marten/Horsephotos.com)

ICY ATLANTIC (Stormy Atlantic) was purchased to be a pacesetter for English
Channel (Smart Strike), but the six-year-old has earned a spot in the Mile
line-up due to an excellent season which included victories in the Arcadia H.
(G2) and Red Bank S. (G3). The latter came over this course, and the Todd
Pletcher charge is a two-time stakes winner at Monmouth. He’ll definitely be
tested for class, but Icy Atlantic’s affinity for the course makes him an
attractive longshot candidate for the exotics.

KIP DEVILLE (Kipling) appeared to be rounding into top form with his second
in the Woodbine Mile last time and remains a threat here with his best, but
we’ve been thrown off by a recent health issue. Trainer Richard Dutrow revealed
Monday that the gray had a slight filling in his pastern, forcing him to move a
scheduled work. The Grade 1 winner will need to be at his best to contend for it
all here, and we question whether that will be the case. Kip Deville also didn’t
run well in his lone appearance over Monmouth’s course, finishing third at 6-5
in the Oceanport S. (G3) this year.

MY TYPHOON (Ire) (Giant’s Causeway) is a very nice mare who recorded three
straight graded wins this season for Bill Mott, but she won’t bring her best
form into the Breeders’ Cup, finishing eighth in the Flower Bowl Invitational
(G1) last out and sixth in the Ballston Spa H. (G2) before that. We’ll let her
surprise us. PURIM (Dynaformer) is doing well presently for Tom Proctor, closing
gamely to win the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) last out, and he’ll bring a two-race win skein into
the Breeders’ Cup. The five-year-old is a solid performer, but he didn’t run
well in his previous start over soft turf. Purim also might find himself a
little overmatched at this level.

COSMONAUT (Lemon Drop Kid) will likely be forwardly placed under Julien
Leparoux, but he failed to sustain a clear lead in the stretch of the Shadwell
last time and will face much more difficult customers here. HOST (Chi) (Hussonet),
a Grade 1 winner from the Pletcher shedrow, hasn’t displayed his best form this
season. The seven-year-old’s biggest career win, the Shadwell,
came in 2005, and the old timer doesn’t look up to this challenge.

AFTER MARKET (Storm Cat) owns the class to be a major factor, but he needs it
firm and won’t get those conditions on Saturday. He’ll likely be scratched.

REBELLION (GB) (Mozart [Ire]) is a turf sprinter who looks overmatched here.
