Japanese Grade 1 star UTOPIA (Jpn) (Forty Niner) leads a field of eight postward in
the $100,000 Stuyvesant H. (G3) at Aqueduct on Saturday. The Godolphin
colorbearer looked superb in taking the Westchester H. (G3) in his U.S. debut
in the spring, and following an unplaced effort in the Meadowlands Cup S. (G2) off
the shelf, we expect the seven-year-old to return to his winning ways in this 1
1/8-mile event.
Conditioned by Saeed bin Suroor, the chestnut possesses the tactical speed to be
in the mix early, and his best effort through the stretch should earn him the
tally under Mike Luzzi.

AWFULLY SMART (Anees) has compiled a smart 17-8-2-1 career mark for trainer
Alan Goldberg and will look to add a second graded win to his resume. The gelded gray
was a facile winner of the Stymie S. at Delaware last out and a good fourth in
the Meadowlands Cup two prior, so we feel that he’ll be a major player in this one. The
four-year-old should be near the lead early and prove tough to knock off late
beneath Rajiv Maragh.

WHO WHAT WIN (Dance Brightly) has proven to be a solid performer within New
York-bred ranks and will step into open company on this occasion. The John
Terranova trainee shows two wins and a second from three efforts over this oval
and comes off a big runner-up effort in the Empire Classic H. at this distance. The
addition of jockey Edgar Prado, along with his tactical speed, makes this one live.

Old warrior EVENING ATTIRE (Black Tie Affair [Ire]) hasn’t crossed the line
first in eight straight and will need plenty of pace help to bag the top prize
in here. The Pat Kelly charge was fourth in the Massachusetts H. last out and
could find the sledding a touch easier in here, although we don’t endorse him to
win this. A top three placing is quite viable with a well-timed ride from Jose
Espinoza.

Fellow Kelly trainee NAUGHTY NEW YORKER (Quiet American) is capable on his
best day, but must do better than his fourth as the favorite in the Empire
Classic to challenge
this bunch. The five-year-old has won twice on this dirt and three times at this
trip, so it’s not inconceivable to see him in the running late. We’d include
this one in all of the vertical exotics.

BARCOLA (Old Trieste) is hard to corral when cruising alone on the lead,
evidenced by his 6 1/4-length rout in the Kelso S. most recently, but the
four-year-old should face pressure early and often in here, and we don’t endorse
his chances to wire this bunch. The Mark Hennig trainee could hang around for a
minor award with a sensible trip.

HUNTING (Coronado’s Quest) broke through with a big allowance win at Monmouth
on Breeders’ Cup weekend, but still looks a few notches below the best in here.
Multiple stakes winner MALIBU MOONSHINE (Malibu Moon), who was third in the
Suburban H. (G1) this summer, needs a total pace
meltdown to be a threat in this one. We can’t see a scenario where that
happens.
